Affordable Entertainment for All Ages and Interests Whatever the Weather!

We provide a short train ride in historic narrow-gauge railway carriages out to and back from Pen-y-Mount station, with, on the way back, a stop of around half an hour to explore ‘The Engine Sheds’, our extensive all weather, interactive railway heritage centre, and, subject to volunteer staff availability, opportunities to ride on our miniature railway.

The train departs from Porthmadog (WHHR) Station, just across the road from Porthmadog’s main line (Cambrian Coast) railway station, and gets back in about an hour. Before and after the trip you can also visit our shop, which is well stocked with gifts, toys, railway models and books, and the Russell Café, which serves home cooked food, coffees and drinks. A car park is available free of charge to visitors, although it can get full at busy times.

Everything has been specially prepared to meet Covid-19 hygiene and social distancing requirements. The carriages are organised into a limited number of ‘compartments’ spaced out and demarcated for each household/social group/‘bubble’. The train is hauled by a diesel locomotive, or steam when enough volunteer staff are available.

Tickets are normally available for purchase on the day on a first come first served basis. If you wish to plan well in advance we can take requests for reservations, by phone to or in person at our ticket office. Please be prepared to provide contact details to ensure compliance with Welsh Government/National Health Service Covid-19 contact tracing arrangements.

Confirmed reservations not claimed and paid for 20 minutes before departure will be released for general sale.

Whilst at the Railway, we encourage all our passengers to wear face coverings when possible, excluding those with medical requirements. Aside from this exemption, it is compulsory to wear face coverings in and around the station buildings, the train, the museum and the miniature railway. Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated.

Our ticket office and shop are open on all days that trains are operating, and on Fridays. Opening times on operating days are 9am to either 4pm (up to and including 22nd July) or 5.15pm (24th July to 29th August), 10am to 3pm on Fridays.
