Your Train
We're built two new coaches for 2010, the original Buffet Car which provided refreshments to some of the first tourists on the Welsh Highland Railway and a replica of her sister number 25.
Our heritage train includes the carriage that the Prime Minister rode in when he visited the railway in 1894.The Gladstone Coach was so posh that you got two seats for your money…… one outside for nice weather, and a second seat inside so you could keep dry if it started raining!
The Gladstone Coach is just one of the restored carriages you can ride in.On a nice day, try the toastrack carriage. It got its name because it’s open at the sides, and people can slot in – like slices of toast. The toastrack carriage was built in 1923 by Hudson of Leeds. It cost just £155 to build, and took three weeks…… but it cost a good deal more and took much longer when we came to rebuild it.
The small private saloon carriage only holds ten people, and used to be a wagon carrying missiles and shells in a Royal Navy depot.Someone once said it’s gone from bombs on board to bums on seats……
Our trains are pulled by old fashioned steam and diesel engines. On a steam day, ask the driver and fireman to show you how they put coal in the fire to keep the engine going. Our main diesel, Glaslyn, is named after the river that runs from Snowdon to Porthmadog (maybe that’s why it’s painted blue?) A wheelchair accessible carriage is available on all trains. The double doors are good for pushchairs too!
